BANANAS ABOUT BARDOT: Shedding skins in the name of Brigitte Bardot, Lancel, for its latest muse bag, Le Brigitte Bardot, designed in collaboration with the iconic sex symbol-turned-animal rights activist, has dropped using leather in favor of plant-derived and man-made materials. The pink gingham-lined tote, launched Monday night at a hôtel particulier on Avenue Franklin D. Roosevelt, comes in organic cotton tweed and alcantara versions, using fruit- and vegetable-based dyes. Lancel has just opened its first boutique in Bardot’s stomping ground, Saint-Tropez. Also riding the swelling Bardot wave, today marks the rerelease of an updated version of Karting’s high-waist stretch jersey flared pant modeled by Bardot in the Seventies. Finally, modern-day Bardot look-alike Georgia Jagger has been tapped as the face of Polo de Deauville, the fledgling luxury clothing and activewear line of France’s Deauville polo club. Jagger attended the opening of the brand’s first store in Deauville over the weekend, where she took in a polo match between the Deauville and Chantilly clubs.

BOOK IT JUSTIN: After touching down in Paris after a quick stay in Dubai, Justin Timberlake’s first order of business Monday night was dinner with friends at Ralph Lauren’s new eatery, Ralph’s. To ensure he would have a seat, the musician secured the reservation with the designer himself at the Costume Institute gala at the Met. That was a good call, considering the restaurant is booked through the fall. Catherine Deneuve, Harry Connick Jr., Diane Kruger, Jacques Chirac, Christian Louboutin, Alber Elbaz, Mélanie Laurent and Bruno Frusoni are some of the diners who have made it a hot spot.
HER MAJESTY’S FASHION FAVORITES: Another round of fashion and beauty names has received a royal nod in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, which was published Saturday. Tamara Mellon, founder and chief creative officer of Jimmy Choo, was named an OBE, or Officer of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the fashion industry; photographer Nick Knight was named an OBE for services to art, and Harold Tillman, chairman of Jaeger and the British Fashion Council, was named a CBE, or Commander of the Order of the British Empire. Susan Harmsworth, chief executive officer of Espa, which creates spas, treatments and skin care products, was named an MBE, or Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to the spa and beauty industry. Meanwhile, Catherine Zeta-Jones was named a CBE for services to the film industry and to charity.
PAPER TRAIL: The role of guest editor seems to fit Karl Lagerfeld to a T. For one day later this month, the indefatigable designer will be editor in chief of left-leaning daily Libération, and he’s signed up to do an issue of Figaro Madame in early September.
MASS ATTRACTION: Calvin Klein on Saturday evening will air its spring 2010 men’s show on the mammoth LED screen in Milan’s Piazza Duomo. The half-hour-long presentation, which will take place for buyers and press earlier in the day, will be shown for the masses at 7:30 p.m., giving passersby a first-hand look at the new collection designed by men’s creative director Italo Zucchelli.
CROWD SURFING: Speaking of the Milan men’s shows, a sea of hands is expected in Milan on Friday as Matthew McConaughey is set to make a personal appearance at La Rinascente department store accompanied by designers Stefano Gabbana and Domenico Dolce. The Hollywood star and face of Dolce & Gabbana’s The One for Men fragrance will be at the luxury department store to sign autographs and pose for pictures with the designers in the ground-floor beauty department. McConaughey also plans to attend the designer duo’s men’s show on Saturday to help celebrate their 20th anniversary of men’s wear.
FASHIONABLE DRINK: Dolce & Gabbana and Martini are strengthening their cobranding relationship with a new drink that will be launched during the men’s shows in June. Initiatives that have crowned the long-standing partnership between the two renowned Italian brands include a Martini Bar inside the Dolce & Gabbana flagships in Milan and Shanghai, and a Martini-inspired Dolce & Gabbana suit and shirt.
DRINK UP: The “Curators of Dinner” summer series presented by Belvedere has cooked up The Fairchild, a Belvedere martini inspired by Bon Appétit editor in chief Barbara Fairchild. The cocktail made its debut at L’Espalier in Boston, with servings soon to follow at celebrity chef Jose Andrés’ The Bazaar in Los Angeles and Hubert Keller’s Fleur de Lys. The guest list for Los Angeles, up next, includes actress Debi Mazar, Mayer Russ and chefs Cat Cora, Suzanne Goin, Fabio Viviani, Nancy Silverton and Matt Molina, as well as Carol Smith, vice president and publisher of Bon Appétit and Gourmet brand.
CHANEL HEADS WEST: Far from its Paris debut at the Grand Palais, Chanel’s arctic-inspired runway show for fall 2010 got its first U.S. outing last Wednesday night in an industrial wine cellar outside Seattle, where the catwalk snaked between sleek, stainless steel tanks. About 200 Seattle socials, including co-chairs Jolene McCaw and Kim Richter, turned out for the party at the Novelty Hill Januik Winery. The benefit, underwritten by Nordstrom and attended by president of merchandising, Pete Nordstrom, and his wife, Brandy, raised more than $130,000 for the Northwest Ballet and Seattle’s Henry Art Gallery.
