MODEL BEHAVIOR: A rooster crow heralded the start of Anja Gockel’s runway show. At 10 a.m., it was an early call for much of Berlin’s fashion crowd. But Gockel was there to celebrate the 15th birthday of her label, and she brought in a top model to kick it off. Brit Lily Cole, brunette these days instead of her trademark red, opened and closed the presentation.
FOOTLOOSE: “Cool collaborations don’t always have to be underground,” Adidas’ creative director Dirk Schönberger said of the sportswear giant’s new sneaker collaboration with Diesel. The line was feted in Diesel’s Berlin store on Münzstrasse Thursday night and merged the two brands’ design features. There were black leather high-tops accessorized with chunky silver zippers and brown or white leather sneakers with three studded stripes on their vamps. Prior to the footwear line, the two brands had worked together on a denim collection.
NATURAL SELECTION: The future looks bright for designer Janosch Mallwitz, who was awarded the first Humanity in Fashion Award in Berlin on Thursday, just six months after graduating from the city’s Universität der Künste. As well as receiving a cash prize of 25,000 euros, or about $33,800 at current exchange, Mallwitz will now work together with organic clothing company Hess Natur on their next winter collection. Mallwitz’s impressive first collection included deconstructed unisex tailoring and hefty leather boots for men.
GETTING COMFORTABLE: Guests at G-Star’s private viewings Wednesday during Bread and Butter encountered a dimly lit cabaret-style lounge setting. Waiters served snacks to the sounds of karmic jazz music before Agyness Deyn took to the mic to open the show. Amid the countless variations of denim on stage was a navy, floor-length quilted skirt and quilted men’s trousers. Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit was among VIPs at the show.
BOOTY CALL: Lace bras and platform boots aren’t normally mentioned in one breath, let alone presented at the same launch. But on Thursday at Bread and Butter, Cheap Monday showed its first footwear collection, while also making a debut in underwear. The latter includes printed boxers for men, while for women, there are powder-hued sets accessorized with skull charms and racer-back and halter bras. “It was time to mess around with different markets,” said Hakan Strom, Cheap Monday’s chief operating officer. “Besides, people always like to buy shoes,” he laughed. And so Cheap Monday’s second fall venture features lace-up combat boots, Chelsea boots and desert boots for men, as well as women’s hiking boots and platform ankle boots in patent reds, off-white and black. Cheap Monday has certainly come a long way from starting out in 2004 to selling to around 1,800 doors nowadays and live streaming their upcoming show at Stockholm Fashion Week on Feb. 1.
MAD WORLD: Jessica Weiss and Julia Knolle of German fashion blog Les Mads introduced their first book to an eager crowd of fans at top fashion destination, Berlin Department-Store Cabinet, on Saturday evening. It documents their journeys to the world’s fashion cities and is a go-to guide, with chapters on how to survive winter with style, and debates on the merits of red nail polish. The girls started the blog in 2007 as a hobby and went on to win the title of Blog of the Year at the Lead Awards 2010. They were approached last year by the Berlin Verlag publishing house to make the leap into the world of print. Weiss, dressed in a purple velvet dress by one of her favorite labels, Opening Ceremony, said how she still loves to travel the world on the quest for new trends. “There are some really great things happening here in Berlin. I really liked Perret Schaad and Vladimir Karaleev this season,” she noted. “But I still get most excited about going to Paris and New York.”
