LONDON — Great Britain has a new heir to the throne, a baby boy who will be known officially as His Royal Highness, Prince of Cambridge.
The first child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Queen Elizabeth’s third great-grandchild was born at the Lindo wing of St Mary’s Hospital in London at 4:24 p.m. on Monday, according to Kensington Palace.
The new mother and the new future king of England are believed to be “doing well” and both will remain in the hospital overnight.
Prince William was present for the birth of the baby boy, who weighed 8 lbs 6 oz, and The Queen, The Duke of Edinburgh, The Prince of Wales, The Duchess of Cornwall, Prince Harry and members of both families have been informed and are said to be “delighted” with the news.
“Both my wife and I are overjoyed at the arrival of my first grandchild. It is an incredibly special moment for William and Catherine and we are so thrilled for them on the birth of their baby boy,” said Prince Charles, the new grandfather, in a statement. “Grandparenthood is a unique moment in anyone’s life, as countless kind people have told me in recent months, so I am enormously proud and happy to be a grandfather for the first time and we are eagerly looking forward to seeing the baby in the near future.”
In keeping with tradition, tonight a formal notice of the birth will be posted in a wooden frame and set on an ornate easel behind the railings of Buckingham Palace, The Queen’s London home, for members of the public to read.
The child, whose name will be announced in due course, is third in line to the throne after his grandfather Prince Charles and his father Prince William.
