BRUINS IN AT BOSTON LANDING: When New Balance moves into its new corporate headquarters next year at Boston Landing, they will see their share of Boston Bruins en route to what will be the NHL team’s new practice facility there.
Bruins president Cam Neely has inked a letter of intent for a long-term lease at the mixed-use development in the Allston-Brighton neighborhood of Boston. Elkus Manfredi Architects, the team behind The Shops at Columbus Circle in Manhattan and The Grove in Los Angeles, will design the team’s new ice rink and 25,000 square feet of locker room, training areas and office space. Construction is expected to get under way next spring.
The 14-acre Boston Landing project, which will include 60,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space, a 175-room hotel and residential properties, is expected to be completed next fall. Neely, a former Bruins player, said Tuesday, “Since joining the Bruins in a front-office capacity, a goal of mine has been to move the Bruins into a first-class practice facility and this agreement moves us closer to accomplishing that goal.”
He continued, “The vision that New Balance has for the Boston landing project is exactly what we were looking for, and we are confident that through this partnership, we will build a facility that our entire organization will be proud of.”
As Boston Landing’s anchor tenant, New Balance broke ground on its 250,000-square-foot base camp last fall. A commuter rail station for the MTA’s Framingham-Worcester line will be built and is expected to be completed by the fall of 2016. The entire Boston Landing project will reportedly run north of $500 million.
Jim Halliday, managing director of the NB Development Group LLC, said the deal with the Bruins reflects how Boston Landing “transcends typical brick-and-mortar real estate development by truly enhancing and activating the area’s experience for tenants and residents, and also creating a destination use for visitors.”
