PRIZED JEWELS: Calvin Klein Watches & Jewelry is launching a watch and jewelry design competition giving students at three major schools the opportunity to win a cash prize and have their work displayed at the Baselworld fair in 2015.
Laura Burdese, president of Calvin Klein Watches & Jewelry, said at a dinner in Basel on Thursday that the brand has partnered for the occasion with the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in New York, Istituto Europeo di Design (IED) in Milan and Donghua University in Shanghai.
“The contest gives students real-world experience and potential global exposure for their proposed designs, while the brand gains insight into the fresh visions of emerging design talents from three respected design schools spanning three continents,” the company said.
Participating students will be asked to present watch and jewelry designs that reflect their interpretation of the Calvin Klein Watches & Jewelry brand. Submissions will be evaluated on their creative use of materials, details and packaging, as well as ease of use and functionality.
The jury will include Burdese, Ulrich Grimm, creative director of men’s and women’s shoes and accessories at Calvin Klein, and bloggers Chiara Ferragni, Hanneli Mustaparta and Nicole Warne.
The bloggers attended Thursday’s dinner, which featured a live performance by contemporary violinist Charlie Siem. Calvin Klein Watches & Jewelry is a joint venture between Calvin Klein Inc. and Swatch Group.
