HAVE BAGS, WILL TRAVEL: In what sounds potentially like the makings of a blockbuster comedy, Donna Karan and Calvin Klein are tacking on a Southeast Asia vacation to their joint Q&A Friday with Fern Mallis at the Mint Luxury Conference in Mumbai, India.
Karan was already on board for the India excursion when Mallis suggested to Klein during a holiday lunch at Sant Ambroeus on Madison Avenue that he join them. Karan was interested in talking about her autobiography “My Journey.” When Klein mentioned to Mallis that he had been enjoying making the rounds speaking at universities — as in Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, where he appeared in November — Mallis encouraged him to travel to India with Karan.
Mallis said Tuesday that she told him, “Come together — you could both take vacations in Asia. So they both agreed and are traveling together, having a fine time.”
More than 300 people are expected to attend their talk at the Grand Hyatt Mumbai. Initiated more than 10 years ago to humanize the luxury sector, the one-day conference is organized by HT Media, owner of the three million readers-strong Hindustan Times, and Mint, its premium business newspaper. Billed as “Luxury’s New Frontiers,” other speakers at this year’s edition include Arianne Phillips, Karolina Kurkova, Marcel Wanders and Courtney Love.
Confident about having the event’s key speakers, Mallis said, “Their talks with me will be highlight of the day. I’m very excited about it.”
Unlike the two designers, Mallis’ road trip will be all business. “Then I’ll stay for Lakme Fashion Week…” she said.
