LADIES’ FORTNIGHT: Next month’s Cannes film festival promises to be a female-dominated affair. American director Sofia Coppola will be on the jury presided by “The Piano” director Jane Campion, organizers said on Monday, confirming an April 24 report in WWD.
French actress and former Chanel No. 5 ambassador Carole Bouquet, Iranian actress Leila Hatami and South Korean actress Jeon Do-yeon are to join Coppola on jury duty.
The male contingent includes actors Willem Dafoe and Gael Garcia Bernal, alongside Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn and Chinese director Jian Zhangke.
Campion is the only female director ever to have won the Palme d’Or at Cannes. Organizers of the festival have been criticized in recent years for failing to include films directed by women in the official competition at the event, which this year runs from May 14 to 25.
Among the 18 films in competition this year are two helmed by women — Naomi Kawase’s “Still the Water” and Alice Rohrwacher’s “Le Meraviglie.”
