CAUSES CELEBRE: Fashion and beauty M&A specialist Karine Ohana, owner of the boutique M&A firm Ohana & Co., teamed up with Alain Nemarq, worldwide chairman of Mauboussin, to throw a lunch in honor of International Women’s Day. Held March 8 at Mauboussin’s Madison Avenue store in New York, the event featured nine prominent philanthropists and the charities they support. “The idea came about when I was speaking to women about their passions — and each brought up a project important to her,” said Ohana. For Sylvie Chantecaille, it is protecting the world’s oceans; for Sarah Kugelman, the American Cancer Society, a cause which she became involved with after her father’s death from lung cancer. Francine LeFrak, festooned in jewelry created by her charity Same Sky, spoke movingly of Rwandan genocide survivors who now earn 15 to 20 times the average wage by working as artisans in the program. Charlotte Moss, who donated bone marrow to save her brother’s life 14 years ago, spoke on behalf of The Bone Marrow Foundation.
Other honorees included Shulamit Katzman of Larger Than Life USA; Dana Buchman for Promise Project; Ruma Bose, author of “Mother Teresa, CEO,” and Christine Dutreil of the Anne Fontaine Foundation. Ohana herself advocated for Ben Gurion Water & Energy Project, which advances and assesses promising alternative energy technologies, particularly those involving solar electric power generation.
