Celebrating Rent the Runway’s ‘Trendsetter’ Series

Lela Rose hosted a private dinner in her palatial Tribeca apartment.

CURATORS: “I need to figure out exactly how many more dresses I have to sell to get a place like this,” laughed Rachel Roy, taking in the palatial Tribeca apartment in which she stood. Said apartment (tricked out with a doggie-elevator, a dining room table that descends from the ceiling and a closet the size of most studio apartments) belongs to Lela Rose, who hosted a private dinner feting Rent the Runway’s Trendsetter series Tuesday night.

The party-dress-purveyor has appointed “trendsetters,” the likes of which include Roy, Rose, Tinsley Mortimer, Lauren Bush Lauren and others, to curate collections each month on the site. Jennifer Hyman, Rent the Runway’s CEO, shared how the curators were selected. “We chose established authorities, women who are looked up to, not just for their fashion sensibility but for their amazing careers,” Hyman said. “We wanted women who have it all.”

But not all of the trendsetters feel they fit the bill. “I mean, I’ve been deemed a trendsetter by two really good girlfriends [Hyman and Jennifer Fleiss, Rent the Runway’s President] so I don’t know if that really counts,” the designer said. “That’s like my mom coming to my show and telling me I did a good job.”
