MUJI MUSINGS: Wallpaper magazine has unveiled the celebrity judging panel — and winners — of its 2016 Design Awards featured in the February issue, which hits newsstands today.
Eddie Redmayne joined the panel of judges including jewelry designer Delfina Delettrez, architect David Adjaye, industrial designer Konstantin Grcic, art director George Lois and the designer and architect Patricia Urquiola. The judges’ committee decided on the winners from 11 categories, including men’s fashion, women’s fashion and new grooming product.
Céline scooped the award for women’s wear, beating Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Marni and Comme des Garçons. Ermenegildo Zegna Couture took home the men’s fashion collection award, with finalists including Comme des Garçons, Caruso, Prada and Junya Watanabe.
“If good design is about making life easier, than the simpler it is, the better,” said Eddie Redmayne. “I wonder if in 50 years’ time we’ll have come full circle, and I’ll be sitting at home with nothing but a pad of paper and my Muji stationery?”
Judges also picked Apple Watch Hermès, by Apple and Hermès for the Life Enhancer of the Year award, while Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec were named the Designers of the Year. “Serif ” TV, by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, for Samsung took home Best Domestic Design while the Misoka • ISM toothbrush, by Kosho Ueshima won the Best New Grooming Product and the Best City award went to Copenhagen. Aman, Tokyo was recognized as the Best New Hotel while Juana La Loca, Bogotá received the Best New Restaurant award. Fondazione Prada, Italy, by OMA was awarded the Best New Public Building while Lattice House, India, by Sameep Padora & Associates was named the Best New Private House.
This is the 12th edition of the Wallpaper Design Awards, with previous judges including Victoria Beckham, Grayson Perry and Rick Owens.
