BAGGING IT: Stuart Vevers and Colette hosted an intimate dinner in Paris on Monday night to celebrate the launch of his first collection for Coach, which is to remain exclusive at the Paris specialty store before hitting other retailers around the globe in September.
The creative director cited a “really, really good start” of the products, including the limited-edition Ryder and Dakotah bags. Yet his mind was already set on the next venture.
Vevers ran over to his chair and grabbed a sleek black oversize calfskin tote with an American bandana print on the inside. “This is my first Coach for men; I call it the Hudson tote,” he said, adding it was slated to make its debut in fall 2015, along with other styles.
Footwear and men’s bags are a fast-growing piece of the pie, confirmed Nigel Darwin, Coach’s president for Europe. “For a while, the Swingpack was very hot, first among Asian tourist customers, then the locals caught on. But in the last nine months, the backpack has really taken off,” he said. Men’s now represents 25 percent of the business, he added.
Darwin said Coach was looking to launch e-commerce in Europe in 2015. Until then, its only European online presence would be on Net-a-porter, which is due to start trading the label in August.
