MASTER CLASS: Cynthia Rowley, who is passing through Tokyo to celebrate the 10th anniversary of her brand’s presence in Japan, carved out some time from her whirlwind three-day tour to give a chat as part of the city’s fashion week. She spoke about the inspiration for her festive spring-summer collection — complete with gold confetti print — and future plans to expand the business with an outpost in Seoul set to open in November and an upcoming hybrid clothing/art gallery/bookstore/candy store in New York. Although she said she probably won’t make it to any runway shows in Tokyo, she spoke admirably of Somarta designer Tamae Hirokawa, who customized a Smart car and dressed some mannequins for a mini display outside one of the show venues. “I think it looks cool. I love the Smart car. I want to do a Smart car, I want to drive a Smart car,” she quipped.
