GET HOOOKED: When she discovered the amount of fabric wasted from off-cuts in the fashion industry, Netherlands-based Geesje Mosies had a novel idea to turn it into something useful. Her brand, Hoooked, was created in 2007 to buy leftover fabric from the fashion industry and turn it into a fiber for handicrafts like knitting and crocheting.
Today Hoooked recovers 400 tons of fabric each month, mainly in Europe, cuts it into strips and reels it into 850-gram balls to sell to craft enthusiasts, who turn it into fashion or home accessories, for example. “The collection evolves permanently because it is made with the remnants of the fashion industry for the coming season,” Geesje said at an event hosted during Paris Fashion Week by embroidery thread maker DMC, her distributor in France, the U.K. and Spain and soon Japan. Some 18 colors and patterns make up the spring 2013 collection for those markets. Geesje said she is also starting to collect textiles from Mexico and Brazil, which would allow her to grow in other parts of the world. “But European production is the main focus,” she said. Hoooked is also sold in the U.S. and Australia.
