Necessary Clothing Expands in New York

The Canal Street store is the brand’s sixth unit in Manhattan.

ESSENTIAL ENTITY: Necessary Clothing, a contemporary retailer of young women’s, girls’ and special-size apparel, has opened a 6,500-square-foot store at 261-263 Canal Street in New York, between Broadway and Lafayette Street. It’s the brand’s sixth unit in Manhattan; Necessary Clothing brand has built an empire on Broadway, with five stores at numbers 404, 442, 443, 501 and 676. The brand’s website is in the process of being relaunched. Necessary Clothing is a resource for trendy fashion under $100. Tops are about $17.99 to $25.99; dresses, $14.99 to $54.99, and jackets, $12.99 to $54.99. The store features runway and street trends and looks influenced by celebrities. The new store has an open feel with exposed brick walls, stainless steel fixtures and backlit shoe and accessories closets. Necessary Clothing is the first retailer to open on Canal Street since New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced efforts to clean up and commercialize the street, which is known for makeshift shops selling counterfeit products.
