Versa Capital Eyeing Ashley Stewart?

The private equity firm may be considering purchasing the retail chain for large sizes market sources said last week.

EYEING ASHLEY STEWART?: Versa Capital is eyeing Ashley Stewart, the chain for large sizes concentrated in urban settings, for possible purchase, market sources said last week. Versa, a Philadelphia-based private equity company that invests in distressed companies, had no comment Friday. Versa’s holdings are diversified and include Avenue, another plus-size chain, as well as Bob’s and Eastern Mountain Sports, and newspapers, restaurants and fabric firms.

One source said Versa had been considering buying Dots, but shifted its attention to Ashley Stewart, which is owned by Gordon Brothers. “Unfortunately we are unable to comment at this time,” said a Gordon Brothers spokeswoman. Dots, owned by Irving Place Capital, filed for bankruptcy in January.
