FABRICA TAKES A STAND: Earlier this month Fabrica, the Benetton Group’s communication research center, made an artistic statement about the financial crisis with “Imaginaires,” and apparently some people will be buying it. In fact, Boffi, the Washington boutique, bought the entire collection for $2,700. A series of hand-blown glass objects were transformed into a variety of unexpected objects such as a glass handbag with leather handles, a glass fire extinguisher and an inanimate pet with fake rabbit ears. Set up for the International Contemporary Furniture Fair and staged at the New Museum, the temporary exhibition included a table covered with a labyrinth of white vegetable-shaped ceramic pieces intertwined with black computer wires and monitors flashing vegetable-shaped numbers, which indicated the ever-changing hour, minutes and seconds. The white tablecloth with an intricate black pattern was meant to mirror the New York City skyline. Fabrica’s head of design Sam Baron, whose contribution was a hammer partially encased in glass, noted that design can bring a narrative and still be useful. “It’s a bit strange but it is always better to shake the minds of the people,” he said.
TARGET BAGS FALCHI: Carlos Falchi is the next designer up in the Target rotation. As Target’s eighth limited edition affordable handbag launch, Falchi’s designs will be available at the retailer’s stores and on target.com from Nov. 1 to Dec. 27. The 13-item line will consist of faux snakeskin handbags in jewel tones such as plum and teal with contrasting shades of brown, black and gray. Some handbags will utilize collage or patchwork techniques. Felix Ray, designed by Lily Band and Sulaika Zarrouk, is the most recent accessories collaboration at the mass chain. Felix Ray handbags bowed on March 29 and will be available until June 14. Hayden-Harnett, Anya Hindmarch, Devi Kroell and Botkier have done accessories lines for the discounter in the past.
MANO A MANO: Sure, the Champagne will be sipped and the hors d’oeuvres will be passed like any other polo match, but between chukkers there’s one topic that will surely rule all the chatter — Harry versus Nacho? On Saturday, HRH Prince Harry of Wales will play for the first time in the U.S. in an exhibition match against Polo Ralph Lauren poster boy Nacho Figueras on New York’s Governors Island. The winner will not only receive the requisite trophy, but also a Piaget Polo FortyFive watch priced at $11,900, sponsored by the fine watch and jewelry firm.
