GIRLS ON FILM: Her capsule collection for River Island may be dropping after that of pop superstar Rihanna, but British designer Georgina Hardinge has her own links with the music business. “I’m designing the tour costumes for a massive girl band — you’ll find out who it is next week,” she teased at the launch of the British Fashion Council and River Island’s Fash/On Film collaboration. “I’m straight back in the studio on Sunday and Monday for rehearsals.”
The Fash/On Film digital schedule showcases shorts from emerging talent alongside established directors and luxury brands — from Saga Sig for Fred Butler to ABCDCD for Louis Vuitton and Show Studio’s Nick Knight for Lane Crawford — all of which were previewed to an enthusiastic audience.
Director Alex Turvey, behind the Anna dello Russo for H&M campaign video, created a film celebrating Hardinge’s collaboration with River Island and starring model Ben Grimes. Both film and collection were inspired by the Surrealist artist H.R. Giger.
“It’s all about metamorphosis,” explained Turvey. “There’s this queen-like figure (Grimes) who gives birth to these beautiful women. She then consumes them for their power and is regenerated through a gorgeous dress which is Georgia’s showpiece.” Not only was the two-minute short epic in subject matter, it was also shot in the studio where George Lucas filmed “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Star Wars.”
