Fendi Asks Asian Designers to “Dream” up Baguettes

Fashion house holds a competition for young design talents

Fendi’s most famous handbag is getting a high-tech makeover in Asia thanks to the “Design Your Dream Baguette” competition. More than 20,000 designers from Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand entered the contest, submitting computer-generated sketches of their fresh takes on the iconic bag celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. An exhibition at Hong Kong’s Harbour City, running Aug. 8 to Aug. 11, will display the work of the 50 finalists. The top five winners- selected by Silvia Venturini Fendi herself- will be announced the last day of the show.  For their prize, the lucky five get to visit Fendi’s headquarters in Rome and Milan and attend the house’s spring/summer 2009 runway show during fashion week. The Hong Kong exhibit, entitled “FENDI 10+ Exhibition- Asia Finale,” will also feature a silent auction of more than 30 Baguettes designed by artists and celebrities from around Asia. The proceeds will help fund the contest winners’ trip to Italy.
