Designer Richard Tyler’s South Pasadena studio was wiped out by a two-alarm Friday morning.
“The entire contents of the building was destroyed, due to fire, heat damage, water damage and smoke damage,” said South Pasadena Fire Department captain Richard Jenkins.
The cause of the blaze is under investigation by the SPFD arson investigator, Jenkins said.
Tyler, a three-time CFDA winner, could not be reached for comment at press time. The Australian-born designer lives in South Pasadena and has dressed such celebrities as Julia Roberts, Cher, Elton John and Angelica Huston. Roberts’ wedding gown was reportedly lost in the fire.
Called to the scene at 9:19 a.m., local firefighters had to force entry into the 5,000-square-foot building. At that time, no one was inside the 525 Mission Street address. Tyler arrived “for a brief period of time” while the blaze was being fought, Jenkins said. Several of his employees stayed longer. The studio remains standing.
Thirteen fire engines and rescue squads from South Pasadena, Pasadena, Arcadia, Alhambra and San Mareno were called in. It took about an hour to put out the fire but crews remained on the scene for five hours. One SPFD captain suffered a back injury and was treated at a local hospital. He has since been released.
