The front row of the Atelier Versace couture show at the Ritz Paris on Sunday looked a little like a “Glee” reunion. Cast members Lea Michele, Cory Monteith and Matthew Morrison were among the star-studded audience, which also included Elizabeth Banks, Jessica Alba, Christina Hendricks and Fan Bingbing.
Michele and Monteith, who are a couple offscreen, were on the last leg of a European tour that has taken them to the U.K., the Netherlands and Belgium. Michele said it was a far cry from the trip around the British Isles that she took after graduating high school. “I like this one better, trust me. I wasn’t staying at the Ritz when I was in high school. I remember some pretty bad hotels,” she laughed.
Morrison took advantage of the show’s summer hiatus to cut his famously wavy locks. “I wanted a nice summer look — just nice ’n’ easy to celebrate vacation,” he explained. The performer said he was recording his second album, which will feature Broadway standards including “On the Street Where You Live” and “The Lady Is a Tramp.” He’s also looking forward to performing them for an audience. “There’s nothing for an actor like being on a live stage,” he enthused.
Hendricks, meanwhile, was keeping fans guessing about a possible romance between her character, Joan Holloway, and leading man Don Draper on “Mad Men.” “I can never say never, only [series creator] Matt Weiner can say that, but not that I’m aware of,” she smiled. The actress recently traded Joan’s hourglass dresses for black turtlenecks and cigarette pants for her role as a beatnik in British director Sally Potter’s untitled new film. “It takes place in 1960 in London, and it’s sort of about a family dealing with the threat of potential nuclear war,” she said.
Pierce Brosnan, in town shooting “Love Punch” opposite Emma Thompson, said it was his first-ever fashion show. “It’s quite delightful, I’m sitting here beside this beautiful Chinese actress, and Christina Hendricks is just over there. Things could be worse,” he quipped. Alba had put her recent foot injury behind her and was standing by to film a sequel to “Sin City” with director Robert Rodriguez. “I don’t know though — it’s just a rumor. When Robert tells me to come to work, then I show up,” she said.
Down the row, M.I.A. was momentarily speechless after being informed that Florence Welch has confessed to having a “girl crush” on the “Bad Girls” singer. “She does? Really?” she said, digesting the news. “Well, that’s interesting. She’s awesome, I love her. I didn’t know that though, so I don’t know what to say. I’ll be tweeting her tonight.” Having recently collaborated with Madonna, M.I.A. is hard at work on her next album, to be called “Mathangi.” “It’s actually my birth name,” she explained.
For Milla Jovovich, the show brought back memories of the late Gianni Versace. “When I was 15, Gianni hired me for his couture show in Milan. I didn’t know how to walk, but he loved me so much, he put me on a swing, and so I just swung on this beautiful swing throughout the show,” she said.
After the catwalk show, guest repaired upstairs for drinks, dinner and an after party cohosted by Le Baron. Arriving at the cocktail, Banks ordered a Negroni. “It’s yummy,” she cooed. While in Paris, the actress plans to celebrate her ninth wedding anniversary at Caviar Kaspia. Next up: Shooting “Catching Fire,” the next episode in the “Hunger Games” saga.
