HELLO KATIE: Prior to Carmen Marc Valvo’s show Friday, it took multiple shots before Katie Couric was satisfied with a photo of herself and the designer’s p.r. man Frank Pulice. “You obviously didn’t see my segment on selfies,” Couric jokingly chided her cell-phone-snapping stylist Cynthia Gardner. “You have to take it at a 45-degree angle. It always looks better. Randi Zuckerberg taught me that.”
After posing for another photo showing off her pink rhinestone Hello Kitty phone case, Couric suggested a do-over. “You might want to put your flash on too. I’ve become like the virgin instructor for cellphones,” she said.
As for the case, Couric bought it for herself and likes that it’s easy to find in the bottom of her purse “which is inevitably a big black hole.” Couric offered, “I have a Hello Kitty bicycle that’s pink and Hello Kitty is on the tire treads. It was a gift. I am really not a Hello Kitty freak. I just happen to have a couple of Hello Kitty items.”
In other news, the talk-show-host-turned-Yahoo-executive said she hasn’t figured out what she will wear when she marries John Molner this summer. Her new job is another work-in-progress with the biggest challenge being “just figuring out how to have great content that doesn’t look simply like TV online.”
Before the lights went down, Paula Zahn, who used to face off against the former “Today” show-er during their morning news show days, crossed the runway to chat with Couric. Zahn too has long been on to other things, namely PBS’ “Sunday Arts” show and Investigation Discovery’s “On the Case with Paula Zahn.” Laughing at the dichotomy, Zahn said, “It’s great. One day I’m at Carnegie Hall and the next I’m at Attica,” (meaning the New York prison, not the Grecian region).
