NO TIME LIKE THE PRESENT: Ali Hewson pulled out all the stops for her Edun show Sunday, packing the front row with her famous friends. She and her husband, Bono, made them all feel welcome before the lights went down. They chatted up Sting and his wife, Trudie Styler, while Naomi Campbell and Christy Turlington whispered nearby. Courtney Love, Corinne Bailey Rae, The Edge and Helena Christensen were among the VIPs but the models on the runway still managed to hold their own. After the show, a friend of Bono’s summed up the catwalk in two words: “very sexy.” “We’re sexy,” Bono shot back with a smile.
The talent was not lost on Sting either. Asked if there is anything that drives him crazy about fashion, he said, “Yeah, the women.”
“No, I love it. It’s nice to be in the audience,” said Sting, adding that Edun’s sourcing surprised him. “Bono was telling me that half the clothes are manufactured in Africa. That’s an interesting and good idea.”
While Love said she had no reservations about going to a fashion show on the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the milestone resonated with Sting. Noting that he and Styler had friends who perished in the Twin Towers, Sting said, “It’s a serious day but life goes on. That’s how we fight against terrorism. That’s the only way really — live your life.”
