FIELD DAY: Rick Owens’ men’s show, with its edgy interpretation of sportswear, attracted a fittingly high-caliber athletic crowd in Paris on Thursday.
National Basketball Association star Russell Westbrook, in town to celebrate his collaboration with Barneys New York, gave Victor Cruz a giant bear hug as they greeted each other on the way in to the Palais de Chaillot venue. While Westbrook is a regular at New York shows, this was his first time in Paris.
“The first thing I saw when I got here was the Eiffel Tower, so the setting is definitely different,” he said.
Cruz, meanwhile, was in town to shoot a new ad campaign for an unnamed French brand, he said. And another NBA player, Serge Ibaka, was taking in his second fashion show, having swung by 3.1 Phillip Lim earlier in the day.
“I’m on holiday; my parents live here,” he explained.
The athlete was off next to his native Congo to spearhead with UNICEF a basketball camp for orphaned children. Then Ibaka would begin practicing with the Spanish national team in the run-up to the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
Could he also be considering a move into fashion?
“We’ll see,” said Ibaka. “I’m seeing the shows so that I can learn about fashion — and then, who knows?”
