INDUSTRIAL LIGHT AND MAGIC: On Tuesday afternoon, before the start of Rodarte’s runway show at the factorylike Center 548 in Chelsea, Natalie Portman was standing in front of her seat looking a little cold. The actress was wearing one of the Mulleavy sisters’ cobweb sweaters, which seemed to consist of more negative space than thread. “I’m just crossing my arms,” she said. As showgoers climbed the space’s narrow stairs and the house filled, a few other notables including Dakota Fanning and Maria Sharapova took front-row seats. Further down the runway, Portman’s “Star Wars” director George Lucas was standing near the doorway that led backstage. Lucas explained that the designers were favorites of both his daughter and his girlfriend, Mellody Hobson. “I go with them,” he said. “Whatever they say is right.” The director, dressed in jeans, a plaid shirt and white running sneakers, pivoted back to the Mulleavys. “They’re very quirky in an interesting way,” he said. “They’re very out of the box. I like to be out of the box. I don’t like to follow the tradition.”
