FUR BAN UPDATE: The West Hollywood City Council on Monday night postponed its consideration of a controversial fur apparel ban for at least 30 days. The postponement gives the council time to clarify what fur goods would be covered by the ban and solicit information from retailers affected by the proposed ban. “They wanted the business community’s voice to be heard, so it was good news for us,” said Genevieve Morrill, president and chief executive officer of the West Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which opposes the ban on fur apparel. “I am hopeful that we will try to find some compromise.”
Last month, the city council voted unanimously to move forward with the nation’s first ban on sales of new fur apparel products. Fashion retailers in West Hollywood, an estimated 46 percent of which carry fur items, are concerned the ban will cause customers to flee to neighboring cities with no restrictions on fur sales.
