GOLDSCHMIED, J. CREW MIX: Denim guru Adriano Goldschmied has teamed with J. Crew to produce the GoldSign x J. Crew capsule collection, two jean styles and a skirt that will be available in 11 J. Crew stores Jan. 28 and on jcrew.com Feb. 27. Retailing from $198 to $288, the pieces come in five denim washes as well as a two wool-denim washes, and represent a new direction for both the eight-year-old Los Angeles premium denim line and the retailer.
“I’ve never done a collaboration with an American company, and certainly not one with a gigantic store business,” said Goldschmied, who sold a style from the regular GoldSign collection to the retailer last season after a J. Crew buyer spotted them at the ENK trade show. “I’ve known Mickey [Drexler] a long time and we have a lot of respect for each other. For both of us, it was about bringing something to market that was both new and right.”

Goldschmied veered from the ubiquitous skinny jean and designed three pieces inspired by Norma Jean Baker and the all-American pin-up girl. “I wanted to go back to what beauty was at that time, curvy and classic, which is also very fitting for what J. Crew represents.” The high-waisted jeans and pencil skirt come in a range of natural washes made with Italian minerals used to paint buildings in Florence. The fabrics are selvage denim with a subtle stretch and wool-denim, both nods to vintage jeans with modern comfort. Designs are being finalized for fall, and Goldschmied said that both companies were open to continuing the collaboration. “There are no obligations in any way for either of us, but my feeling is it will be a long-term relationship,” he said.
