Japan’s fashion community is honoring High Fashion, one of Japan’s most ground-breaking and influential fashion magazines of the past half century. Beauty company Pola and Japan Fashion Week are sponsoring a retrospective dedicated to the iconic magazine, which is closing its print edition and converting into a Web site.
Pola’s museum annex in Ginza is hosting the exhibition, which runs through Sunday. It showcases select photos from the magazine’s 50-year history, such as a shoot of Sixties shift dresses designed by Yves Saint Laurent for Christian Dior. An editor’s schedule and invitations to Paris fashion shows past as well as a host of other historical items are on display as well.
Since its inception, High Fashion made a niche for itself by covering all aspects of couture and ready-to-wear fashion, from the elegant or preppy to the punk or deconstructed. It also made a point of giving coverage to Japanese designers such as Rei Kawakubo, Hanae Mori, Yohji Yamamoto and Junya Watanabe.
