HOCKEY STYLE: New York Ranger Sean Avery is stepping off the ice and into cyberspace. Today at noon, the athlete, who is known for his love of fashion, will kick off a three-part weekly series on Gilt Man called “Avery’s Rules.” The first, “At Work,” spotlights his favorite products “to dress the modern power player.” A guy’s work apparel, Avery said, should have “a little richness to it. That’s your business. You’ve got to dress the part.” Next week, Gilt will showcase Avery’s top picks for “Going Out,” followed by his choices of what to wear “On the Weekend.”

BRIDAL WATCH: Marchesa, which first introduced bridal gowns in 2008, is pushing deeper into the world of weddings. The label just inked a licensing deal with Priscilla of Boston to launch a collection of bridal gowns under the Eterna by Marchesa name, exclusively for Priscilla of Boston. Further details, like launch dates and price points, will be made available at a later date.
HITTING ROBERTSON: Michael Kors is making like Chanel, Dolce & Gabbana and Ralph Lauren, and spreading its Los Angeles retail footprint to cover both Robertson Boulevard and Rodeo Drive. According to real estate sources, Michael Kors, which already has a store on Rodeo Drive, has signed a lease for the roughly 2,000-square-foot space that has been occupied by Robert Clergerie at 108 North Robertson Boulevard. The upcoming Robertson store is one of several new locations for the brand, including its largest flagship to date, in Paris, and in New York, a Collection boutique at 790 Madison Avenue and a lifestyle flagship slated for a summer opening at Rockefeller Center. The store will put Michael Kors in prime paparazzi territory across from the famed celebrity haunt The Ivy. It better get ready for a close-up.
LEAKY JANE: The gift bags for the “Jane Eyre” premiere after party on Wednesday night proved more useful than anyone could have imagined. The W-emblazoned vinyl totes (W magazine was a sponsor of the event, along with Saab) contained miniature orange umbrellas, which, considering a last-minute change of venue due to “leaks” at the SoHo Grand and a sudden barrage of inclement weather, was bordering on psychic party planning. “So Peggy Siegal has a crystal ball,” one partygoer said with a smile. Thakoon Panichgul, Lena Dunham, Ted Hope, Zoë Kravitz and Nev Schulman were all on hand, eager to fete the film’s director, Cary Fukunaga, and the project’s stars, Michael Fassbender and Mia Wasikowska. Fassbender only stayed at the party for a moment, having to head back to the set of “Shame,” his new film, which is currently in production. Wasikowska, clad in a black Elie Saab cocktail dress, was all sparkles and smiles, beaming and receiving hugs and praise from Glenn Close. “I’m happy. Tired, but happy,” she said with a grin. Wasikowska seems to be on quite a literary bend with her roles, with her star-making turn in last year’s Lewis Carroll-based romp “Alice in Wonderland” and now having tackled the title character in Charlotte Brontë’s masterwork. “It’s a coincidence,” she smiled, “not a requirement. I was drawn to the role because she’s a thinker.”
BACK AT THE RANCH: Just the idea of Canyon Ranch was enough to reel in 50 hard-charging New Yorkers to a luncheon last week hosted by the three-property healthy living emporium. CNBC’s “Money Honey” Maria Bartiromo warmed up the crowd with a first-person testimonial from her 15 years of spa going. “I have no agenda here — call me the chief customer,” she said. “What I really love about Canyon Ranch is that it’s a lifestyle. You’re actually doing what we know we should be doing the rest of the time.”
However infomercial-ish that might sound, Bartiromo later said she always pays her own way and has no official ties to Canyon Ranch. The TV journalist’s upcoming trips will be mindful in a more cerebral way. In pursuit of where American companies are investing, she will soon be off to red-hot Brazil to interview government leaders and chief executive officers, followed by Russia and Singapore later this year. While former surgeon general-turned-Canyon Ranch vice chairman Richard Carmona detailed how improved health and wellness can ease the country’s economic burdens, Pat Cleveland, Christie Hefner, Lynn Sherr, Marjorie Gubelmann, Janna Bullock and other guests sampled mushroom soup and Chilean sea bass with such statements as “Is this the typical size of a portion?” and “I love pink peppercorns.”
Equally diplomatic was Hefner, who, as a Canyon Ranch consultant, is developing its intellectual property. In terms of brand building, it draws on similar skills she honed at Playboy, but, she said, “I don’t miss being chief executive officer of a public company for one day.”
Holzer let slip how she is helping the city with a public art project that gets under way in May. Zodiacs designed by the Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei will be displayed in public fountains.
MILLER UNPLUGGED: To give shoppers the skinny about what Nicole Miller is all about, Nicole Miller TV will make its debut Monday on the designer’s Web site. Webisodes detailing her take on fashion design, runway shows, ad campaigns and the like will be updated every two weeks. There are also plans for ones about celebrities, travel, parties and events in New York City and the Hamptons, travel, etc.
FLOWER POWER: Sixteen gowns designed by Philadelphia University fashion design students are being featured in PNC’s 2011 Philadelphia International Flower Show. Students were asked to design gowns and dresses inspired by this year’s Flower Show theme: “Springtime in Paris.” The dresses were then used as inspiration for floral designers, who competed to come up with floral designs that best reflect the fashions. The fashion designs are on display this week, rotating four designs every two days through Sunday. The show, at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, is a celebration of fashion, fragrances and flora that exemplify the height of Parisian influence. “Fashion and design have long been a part of the Philadelphia International Flower Show,” said Drew Becher, president of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. “This year, we are excited to incorporate signature Parisian elements and style that reinforce our 2011 theme, ‘Springtime in Paris.’” The Flower Show attracts some 250,000 guests, who roam through acres of gardens, cafes, parks and floral displays.
PLAY TIME: Mary Janes, hair bows, and knee socks were the biggest fashion statements of the night on Tuesday, when New York City’s elite tots and their parents turned out for the Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center’s 20th Annual Bunny Hop. Held at toy mecca FAO Schwarz, the family event featured face painting and balloon animals for the philanthropists-in-training, some of whom carried tin pails to collect donations for the evening’s cause. The kid-friendly vibe inspired some of the older partygoers to reminisce. Tina Fey recalled her Fisher Price My Friend dolls, while Shoshanna Gruss insisted that her love for Cabbage Patch Kids was at the time “ahead of the curve.” For Nina Garcia, there with son Lucas Alexander, her childhood toy preference was prophetic: “Barbies. I loved making clothes for Barbie, and I think I played with them until I was 13.”
