MULTI MAN: From blogger to author to retailer, that’s the path Scott Schuman has taken since he launched The Sartorialist, the photo-driven blog of the fashionably dressed. On Tuesday night, Schuman’s fans converged on Barneys New York to toast his newly released book of the same name by Penguin.
In addition to selling copies of the book — paperbacks and the hardcover “bespoke” edition — Barneys also turned to Schuman to curate a pop-up shop. The shop, The SartoriaLUST, is on the third floor of the men’s store and showcases an assortment of tailored clothing, sportswear and accessories chosen especially for the space. “I was impressed with Scott and the success of his blog and said, ‘We need to do something with you,’” said Tom Kalenderian, Barneys head of men’s wear. “So we worked together to curate the assortment.”

Among the tidbits in the boutique are Boglioli’s double-breasted navy blazer with colorful buttons; an assortment of accessories from Luca Roda embroidered with the SartoriaLUST label, and several items from the famed Al Bazar shop in Milan. “These items embody the vision and style of The Sartorialist,” Kalenderian said.
The shop will remain through the end of the month. And beyond that? Schuman, taking time between signing autographs, said he “definitely” sees an opportunity selling Sartorialist-branded accessories such as scarves, bags and boxer shorts on his Web site or in retail stores.
HOT COCO: Coco Rocha hasn’t kept track of how many shows she has walked in this week, but the top model, musician and sometime jig dancer has plans to enjoy New York Fashion Week, rather than work all of it. “I’m taking it easy,” said Rocha at Saks Fifth Avenue on Tuesday night, where she cohosted the launch of MCM’s New York Collection with Terron Schaefer, group senior vice president of creative marketing at Saks. Rocha, who was joined by fellow models Raquel Zimmermann, Doutzen Kroes and Dree Hemingway, loves the experience of New York collections above London, Milan and Paris. “The best part is getting to see the other girls, which I haven’t seen forever. It’s also nice to get dressed up once in a while, because we [models] don’t always get to do it.” Schaefer said Saks sold 27 pieces of MCM last week in New York alone.
TABITHA’S TURN: Stylists typically take a backseat to the celebrities or models they dress. But on Tuesday, Tabitha Simmons took a turn in the limelight with a cocktail party to celebrate her eponymous shoe line at Bergdorf Goodman. “It’s going well,” said Simmons, who was accompanied by her husband, photographer Craig McDean. “It’s this, then it’s back to work [on styling].…I styled Rag & Bone and I have to go to Marchesa after this.” There to support Simmons — and her cutting-edge, four-digit price tag shoes — were a flurry of in-crowd members including Georgina Chapman, Karl Templer, Doug Lloyd, Anouck Lepère and Jefferson Hack.
NEW GIRL IN TOWN: If editors were surprised, and possibly annoyed, when invitations to tonight’s Ann Taylor runway show hit their mailboxes, wait until they realize Kate Young is styling with Gucci Westman on makeup and Beverly Bond spinning. Yes, the see-now-wear-now show (fall and holiday 2009 will be on the runway) is a new move for Ann Taylor. The retailer is in the midst of moving its image in a hipper direction, which explains Young, Westman and Bond’s presence, as well as its fall ad tag line, “Ann is ready for a change.”
FORGIVE AND FORGET: Nike is standing behind Serena Williams, despite her profane tirade at the lineswoman at Saturday night’s semifinals match at the U.S. Open. “She has publicly apologized and has stated she let her emotions get the best of her. Nike stands behind Serena and looks forward to her outstanding career continuing,” said a spokeswoman for Nike, Williams’ official tennis outfitter.
BURBERRY’S LIVE WIRE: Who needs a front-row ticket anymore? Burberry has said it will stream its Prorsum fashion show live on the Web on Sept. 22. The show is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Online viewers worldwide also will be able to share comments on the collection. “It’s going to be a celebration of British fashion, British creativity and of Burberry being back home in London, and we are all so excited about it,” said creative director Christopher Bailey. The Burberry announcement comes on the heels of a similar one from Alexander McQueen, which also plans to stream its spring show live from Paris on Oct. 6 in collaboration with SHOWstudio. Burberry’s after-show event at its London headquarters, however, is by invitation only and will feature Agyness Deyn and Alexa Chung as DJs.
TRENDY TOME: Word has it that Prada is launching a book whose details will be unveiled in Milan on Sept. 26 during the spring shows. Two days earlier, the fashion house will cut the ribbon to a new store in Milan.
Speaking of books, Sergio and Pier Luigi Loro Piana also will unveil a tome during fashion week on their trademarked “baby cashmere” fabric. Entitled “Baby Cashmere – The Long Journey of Excellence,” it’s filled with photographs of the Mongolian landscape, the cashmere kids and the Loro Piana brothers’ annual journey to Asia to secure the best raw materials. The limited edition book will be available in Loro Piana stores internationally.
