HULANICKI GOES BACK TO MASS: London department store House of Fraser might have undertaken the latest relaunch of the Biba label as a contemporary line last month, but the label’s founder, Barbara Hulanicki, has another project afoot. Next month, Hulanicki will launch a 14-piece collection with George at Asda, the private label clothing brand from the Wal-Mart-owned supermarket chain. The Barbara Hulanicki for George collection comprises pieces the designer described as “a reflection of all my favorite silhouettes, prints and signature wardrobe essentials.” The collection will retail from a mere 8 pounds, or $13 at current exchange, for a jersey top to 25 pounds, or $40, for a maxidress. A spokeswoman for Asda said the collection would be a one-off for the fall 2010 season, and will be sold only in the U.K. The Asda collection follows a capsule collection that Hulanicki designed for Topshop last year.
BOOK LEARNING: Ten years after her best-selling book “Teenage Beauty,” makeup artist Bobbi Brown is back with a new title for teens, “Beauty Rules” (Chronicle Books). Brown, together with Teen Vogue’s Amy Astley and J. Crew’s Jenna Lyons, will throw a party to celebrate at Hudson & Broad this evening. “It is so important for teenage girls to recognize that, no matter what they may think, everyone is beautiful and has at least one feature that they can play up and enhance,” Brown said of her new book. “The images in magazines and on TV of girls looking perfect are not real. I wanted girls to pick up ‘Beauty Rules’ and be able to find themselves in the book.”
MILANO DESIGN: Milan is gearing up to host its first Design Weekend, from today to Sunday. Organized by RCS MediaGroup with Mondadori Group, the project will involve not only design stores and showrooms, but art galleries, museums and hotels, and it will offer two cultural itineraries: “Arte Milano” and “Secret Milan.” The former will allow free access to both contemporary art galleries and institutional centers, including Fondazione Forma, which is hosting a Robert Doisneau photo exhibition, and Antonio Colombo Arte Contemporanea gallery, where masterpieces of American surrealism will be shown for the first time in the city. “Secret Milan” aims to attract attention to off-the-beaten-path sites with tours in the artsy Brera district; the city’s iconic palazzos-turned-museums, such as the Villa Necchi Campiglio, or in design hotels, such as the Maison Moschino.
In addition, designers and architects including Antonio Citterio, Piero Lissoni, David Chipperfield and Daniel Libeskind will open their studios to the public.
BASQUE-ING IN IT: A stylish set of diners previewed the new Bar Basque restaurant in the Eventi Hotel last week, including Cindi Leive, Marjorie Gubelmann, Cristina Cuomo, Ghislaine Maxwell, Michael Gross, Colin Cowie and Robert Verdi. The Flatiron District’s newest hot spot, which opens Thursday, is the latest project from Jeffrey Chodorow’s China Grill Management. The sleek, glass-encased space features a modern take on Basque cuisine, with servers sporting uniforms created by designer Sophia Tezel, who took inspiration from the Basque-born Cristobal Balenciaga.
HIP TO BE SQUARE: Hermès has collaborated with French artist Daniel Buren on a collection of 365 scarves to be unveiled on Tuesday at the Monnaie de Paris — just in time for the FIAC contemporary art fair, which runs in the French capital from Oct. 21 to 24. The limited edition comes on the footsteps of a 2008 series paying homage to Bauhaus artist Josef Albers. In the spirit of collaboration, the luxury firm said its new Left Bank store would house a florist, a bookstore and a tea room. The 15,000-square-foot space, located at 17 Rue de Sèvres, is scheduled to open on Nov. 19. Home furnishings will cover a third of the store, which occupies a listed Art Nouveau building that used to be a swimming pool.
