SAVING FACE: In Brazil, where cosmetic surgery is something of a national pastime, men and women routinely go under the knife in the name of beauty. Buildings are subject to the same aesthetic scrutiny. In fact, one of Brazil’s best known shopping centers, Iguatemi SP, recently underwent a $14.5 million exterior facelift. The building’s 4,000-square-foot facade was rebuilt using limestone. Reminiscent of neo-classical architecture seen New York and Paris, the exterior overhaul is the first phase of Iguatemi SP’s modernization. “Iguatemi SP is always focused on innovation and constantly renewing itself,” said Iguatemi chief executive Carlos Jereissati. “With this transformation, Iguatemi SP reaffirms its architectural supremacy and becomes a postcard for São Paulo.” Iguatemi SP, which features Diane Von Furstenberg, Missoni and Christian Loubouton, opened in 1966 and is one of the oldest malls in Brazil. Iguatemi JK, a modern structure with sleek interiors was unveiled in July with brands such as Van Cleef & Arpels, Lanvin, Miu Miu and Chanel. JK’s introduction may have prompted parent company, Iguatemi Empress de Shopping Centers SA, to lavish some attention on the stately sibling.
