JEWELRY BOX: Isaac Mizrahi is getting back into the groove of the fine jewelry business.
Xcel Brands Inc., which acquired the brand in Sep. 2011 for $31.5 million, has signed an exclusive license agreement with Clover Corp. to produce and distribute a higher-priced collection under the designer’s name for fall.
Mizrahi is no stranger to the category. “I did two small collections mostly with diamonds. It was about 15 years ago and it was very successful… It lasted three or four years. It was much smaller and the price points were much higher,” the designer told WWD of his former venture. “[But] that was a different world, a different moment. What I find now, in terms of the partnerships that I’ve formed, is that the better you adapt to the world, the better the world adapts to you.”
The new collection, comprised of rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings, features diamonds and colored gemstones such as green and black onyx, pink opal, blue agate, blue topaz and citrine set in platinum and 18kt gold-plated sterling silver. It ranges from $200 to $1,500, with most pieces falling between $300 and $700, and will continue to launch seasonally, in tandem with fall and spring rtw collections.
“Color has always been a very big part of my work, probably the most important part,” Mizrahi said. “It motivates every other thing. It was this idea of being both very fine — in terms of the craftsmanship — and bold at the same time. I wanted to convey those two emotions at the same time.”
Though the pieces are designed to be collected, stacked and layered, Mizrahi believes every piece in the collection can stand on its own.
“Whether I do a wonderful piece of couture for $25,000 or a $25 item for QVC, for me, it’s really about the value,” he said.
