FIT TO BE TIED: Isabel and Ruben Toledo’s more stalwart fans braved Monday’s night snowstorm to hear what the design duo are up to as part of Alliance Francaise’s Fashion Talks series. Glamour editor in chief Cindi Leive introduced the Toledos who are artists-in-residence for Glam Belleza Latina. This summer the husband-and-wife team will also hold that title at Dale Chihuly’s Pilchuck Glass School in Washington state. And tonight DIFFA (Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS) will honor the Toledos at its 16th annual Dining By Design event at Pier 94.
Independent as they have been throughout the years, Isabel Toledo said she would entertain the idea of working with a major brand again as she once did with Anne Klein. “Absolutely, I’d love to — the bigger, the better,” she said.
When her husband mentioned in passing how they would never make 1,000 of anything, she quickly interjected, “Oh yes we can — I hope so.”
Earlier in their chat with Pamela Golbin, chief curator of Fashion and Textiles at Les Arts Décoratifs in Paris, Ruben Toledo recalled how they unknowingly got mixed up with a questionable financial backer early on in their careers. “We didn’t want to end up floating down the river in somebody else’s shoes. It was scary for a long time to get a call at three in the morning [with someone] saying, ‘Hey, you’d better sign the papers.’”
