WATER WORKS: Partners of the UNESCO World Heritage Centre Marine Programme held a cocktail Thursday night in Jaeger-LeCoultre’s Place Vendôme boutique in Paris to launch a short film.
The Swiss luxury watchmaker and International Herald Tribune have been involved in the program to protect maritime locations since 2008. The operation’s new movie, “Marine World Heritage: The Crown Jewels of the Ocean,” will be shown on UNESCO’s Web site.
“Awareness must be raised to build respect of the ocean,” said French actor and producer Jacques Perrin, whose voice narrates the eight-minute film. “I believe it’s very important. I think the new generation now has this ethic, this need to see differently.”
Clive Owen had just made a whirlwind tour of Jaeger-LeCoultre’s manufacturing facility in Vallée de Joux, Switzerland.
“It’s so impressive that still so much is made by hand,” he enthused. “They’ve invented all those machines, but it still takes all those people doing very delicate stuff with their hands. It takes a long time, a lot of patience — and you can see how much work goes into making all these watches.”
Owen said he’s about to start filming “Words and Pictures” with Juliette Binoche in Vancouver.
“I play an English college professor, and she’s an art teacher in the same [school],” he explained.
