GALLIANO GIVES BACK: John Galliano plans to pass on the secrets of his success to a new generation of designers. The designer has been named the new honorary chairperson of London’s Fashion Fringe program, a scheme that supports emerging British design talent.
As part of the role, announced Sunday, Galliano will help judge the next two Fashion Fringe competitions, in 2010 and 2011, taking over from Donatella Versace. “I am hoping we find a rebel genius,” he said in a statement. “Fashion sometimes gets scared and plays it too safe – but I want to push boundaries.” Galliano also nodded to the scheme’s mentoring process. “So many talented designers have been lost or swallowed up by corporate machines because they didn’t know how to handle the business side. I learned the hard way,” he said.
Fashion Fringe will hold a party in April to celebrate Galliano’s appointment. Applications for the scheme, which provides the winner with support and mentoring for their design business worth about 100,000 pounds, or $152,000, opened Sunday.
Three finalists will show their collections at the Fashion Fringe event during London Fashion Week in September, when a winner will be announced.
