JOSIE AND THE DRAGON: Over 220 guests turned out to celebrate the launch of “Josie and the Dragon,” the first book by lingerie and ready-to-wear designer Josie Natori.
The book party, which was postponed due to Hurricane Sandy, took place at Openhouse Gallery, an art gallery on Broome Street in lower Manhattan. The event also featured an exhibition of the book’s original paintings by Andrea Byrne.
“Natori brings art into life so launching the book at a gallery was very important to us,” said Natori. “Everyone seemed to love the illustrations, and thought that the story was a whimsical way to celebrate the beginning of our next 35 years of business. East meets West defines everything we do, so the fact that we are in the Year of the Dragon made this anniversary celebration more special.”
She described the book as a “fashion folklore fairytale” of how she became a businesswoman in the world of finance, and later fulfilled her dream as a fashion designer.
Guests included Donna Hanover, who recently finished a gig on Broadway in Gore Vidal’s “The Best Man” with James Earl Jones, Helen Lowe, Sabina Johnston and Jeffrey Podolsky, who penned the book for Natori, which tells a colorful tale in whimsical rhyme and verse of a “proper,” young Asian girl who wants to break into the fashion business, and for whom the Dragon is a creative inspiration.
Some 2,000 copies of the book will be sold at natori.com for $50, and a signed book giveaway is being offered on Natori’s Facebook page through the month of December.
