NATORIOUS NIGHT: Josie Natori threw an impromptu Champagne party Tuesday at her first namesake store in the U.S., where an eclectic mix of tourists and NoLIta neighborhood habitués rubbed elbows with retailers Terry Lundgren and Michael Gould.
Describing the flash party as an “east-meet’s-west happy hour,” Natori’s jewel-box shop at 253 Elizabeth Street in Manhattan combines a clean, industrial setting with feminine accents of curated collections of sleepwear, loungewear, intimates and ready-to-wear from the House of Natori. Bold colors and Asian-inspired floral prints were displayed against a black background in the 1,000-square-foot retail space which is also furnished with antiques from Natori’s worldwide shopping sprees. All items in the store are for sale, and the theme will change every few months to showcase a specific brand such as Josie Natori, Natori and Josie by Natori.
“The store opened yesterday and I just wanted to have an impromptu, fun event,” said Natori. “The customers in this neighborhood don’t like shopping at department stores, so this location is bringing in a whole different customer. We’ve already had a lot of business.”
Many innerwear items such as tunics are being layered and worn as rtw pieces with jeans or skirts, said Natori.
Meanwhile, her husband Ken, said he was eagerly looking forward to resuming his fishing trips in Palm Beach, Fla., where hurricane season is in full swing.
“It doesn’t matter that it’s hurricane season I like fishing for tuna, because they’re tough fighters,” he said.
