Italian comedy met high fashion at the German embassy in Paris last week when the porcelain manufacturer Nymphenburg unveiled 25 limited edition sets of 16 figurines based on the original commedia dell’arte figurines created by Franz Anton Bustelli in the mid-1700s. The company invited 16 designers to give these dolls a dose of modern style. At a cost of 160,000 euros, or about $252,000 at current exchange, you too can be the proud owner of a Viktor & Rolf Columbine, a Christian Lacroix Julia and Gareth Pugh’s Capitano Spavento, among others. Also, photographer Florian Böhm took portraits of each designer for a book of prints due out in September. It is also a collector’s item that will be signed by each designer.
