SÃO PAULO — Karl Lagerfeld made his first visit to Brazil to unveil the latest leg in the traveling exhibition “The Little Black Jacket.”
The exhibit is on at Oca, the Oscar Niemeyer hut-shaped pavillion in Ibirapuera Park, which is the 15th space worldwide to be occupied by black-and-white images of 100-plus friends of the fashion house wearing the jacket Coco Chanel launched in 1954. The show will run until Dec. 1 and is aimed at further raising Chanel’s profile in the country and city, where there are three brand boutiques in the malls Iguatemi, JK Iguatemi and Cidade Jardim.

Surrounded by Carine Roitfeld and model-turned-music-producer Caroline de Maigret, Lagerfeld stood still as the Brazilian fashion crowd jumped up and down along with M.I.A. at the opening.

Along with him in the VIP area, Diane Kruger, wearing an off-the-shoulder dress with floral appliqués, danced on a chair, moving her head frenetically while her boyfriend, actor Joshua Jackson, was more timid. Brazilian models Izabel Goulart, Isabeli Fontana and Caroline Trentini and artist Vik Muniz were all smiles as they held their smartphones up to Instagram the party.
Lagerfeld arrived a little after 10 p.m., after a day spent doing interviews. By that time, guests had already seen the images displayed along the ground floor, posing with favorites such as Sofia Coppola and her Louis Vuitton-designed bag. The designer left as M.I.A. wrapped up her show by inviting the crowd up on stage.
