RIO IN CHELSEA: Kate Spade has caught London flower fever — and even scooped a prize for its efforts. In honor of the Chelsea Flower Show, the label filled its Sloane Square store with tropical blooms, palm trees and leafy plants inspired by Rio de Janeiro. Spade partnered with Nikki Tibbles of Wild at Heart on a themed window display that earned the Chelsea in Bloom Gold Award for retailers in the neighborhood of the annual show.
“We wanted something tropical and bright and colorful that could be carried through into the store,” said Tibbles. “The toucan is a big part of the wall outside: We used a lot of carnations for the toucan, and then there’s everything tropical — from wisteria to palm leaves, lots of birds of paradise and ginger lilies. All of those tropical amazing colors and rich colored flowers,” she added.
Deborah Lloyd, Kate Spade’s chief creative officer, said the window display took two years to plan. “We got very competitive this year because we decided to really embrace it, and our story for the month was about Rio,” she said. “We felt it fitted the criteria perfectly, so we really went to town. We worked with Nikki Tibbles, who is my favorite florist, ever since I can remember. When I lived in London in Notting Hill, I remember seeing her first boutique and loved her pieces, and so we worked with her to bring it to life,” she said.
