Le Bon Marché Gets Documentary Treatment

Show to air on Oct. 29.

RETAIL PIONEER: As Le Bon Marché prepares to celebrate its 160th anniversary next year, a new documentary sheds light on its founder Aristide Boucicaut, who is credited by many for inventing the modern department store.

“Au Bonheur des Dames, the invention of the department store” lifts its title from the novel by 19th-century French writer Emile Zola inspired by the Left Bank retail emporium, now owned by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton. The documentary, which features reenactments of period scenes, is due to air Oct. 29 on Franco-German television channel Arte.
