LIGHT FANTASTIC: Galeries Lafayette on Monday marked the 100th anniversary of its stained glass dome with an in-store exhibition and a light installation by artist Yann Kersalé. Dubbed “Chrysalide,” the project will illuminate the facade and dome of the flagship on Boulevard Haussmann for at least six years, with an average of 12 different lighting sequences per year, depending on the season.

“It’s a sort of electrocardiogram of the place and an external manifestation of what is going on inside,” Kersalé said. “It’s important to remember that this is the second most visited monument in Paris, after the Eiffel Tower.”

The exhibit “1912-2012. Chronicles of a Creative Itinerary” will run in the Galerie des Galeries space on the first floor through Jan. 26. Designed by OMA, the design studio of architect Rem Koolhaas, and its research unit AMO, it uses vintage documents and footage culled from the store’s in-house archives to celebrate its ongoing links with creative types like Ferdinand Chanut and Jacques Grüber, the architect and glass artist who designed the dome.

A hall of fame features fashion figures who have worked with Galeries Lafayette — everyone from Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel to Jean Paul Gaultier — against a printed textile backdrop designed by Charlotte Perriand for the store in the Twenties.
