LOOKING GOOD: Cover Girl gathered current and former celebrity spokeswomen in Los Angeles at Boa restaurant Thursday night to celebrate its 50th anniversary — and to charge ahead to future anniversaries as a mass market makeup leader. Among the Cover Girls past and present at the event were Ellen DeGeneres, Drew Barrymore, Dania Ramirez, Queen Latifah, Taylor Swift, Cheryl Tiegs and Ana de la Reguera. Esi Eggleston Bracey, vice president of global cosmetics at Cover Girl owner Procter & Gamble Co., couldn’t choose a favorite. “I love all of our Cover Girls, and, really sincerely, they all bring something special and different to the brand,” she said.
Prior to the anniversary event, the brand kicked off a program inviting consumers to relate stories of why they are Cover Girls via Cover Girl’s Facebook page. Eggleston Bracey said entries began pouring in at a rate of 1,000 a minute.

MOVING ON: Billy Susman is leaving Financo Inc., effective immediately. Susman was president of Financo, responsible for general M&A activity. “I would like to express my appreciation for Billy’s many contributions to Financo during the last six years, and I wish him well on his new endeavors,” said Gilbert Harrison, chairman and chief executive officer of Financo.
Susman said, “Financo has been a great home for the past six years. I’m ready to pursue the next chapter of my career, which will continue to focus on retail and consumer industries.”
THE MAYOR’S EAR: New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg isn’t exactly a clotheshorse but he’s still bullish about promoting retail. Though he won’t be there himself, the mayor’s office is rounding up about 100 retail executives at the Yale Club Monday night to discuss a range of subjects on how to spur shopping and support Seventh Avenue, from Fashion’s Night Out to internships at fashion firms.
The mayor will also today proclaim Jan. 8 to 12 National Retail Week to recognize of the financial impact of the National Retail Federation’s annual convention at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, which runs Sunday to Wednesday. The event draws more than 18,500 attendees and 600 exhibitors, and brings in $27.4 million to the city, according to NYC & Co. The proclamation also acknowledges the history of the NRF which began as the Dry Goods Association and celebrates its 100th anniversary this year.
BOOK ENDS: French publisher Prosper Assouline is to be awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Order of Arts and Letters) by France’s culture minister Frédéric Mitterrand. The ceremony is set to take place on Jan. 12 at the Sotheby’s auction house in New York, where the publisher is based. Guests expected to attend include David Lauren, Tommy and Dee Hilfiger and Marvin Traub. Created a decade ago, Assouline Publishing is known for its books dedicated to fashion, photography, art and design.
GIVE THEM A TROPHY: The fifth annual Independent Handbag Designer Awards are open for business. The organization — started by Emily Blumenthal of Handbag Designer 101 (and the forthcoming book “The Handbag Bible”) — is fielding entries on their Web site until April of this year. All independent accessories designers are eligible to enter. The 2011 awards will be presented by InStyle magazine, and prizes include the opportunity to develop a collection for Saks Fifth Avenue, Isabella Fiore or Timberland, as well as feature placement in InStyle magazine and on instyle.com.
Last year, the IHDA received approximately 1,000 submissions, and Blumenthal anticipates this number will double in 2011. Past winners include Katherine Kwei, Adriana Castro and Follis by Catherine Meyer, whose pieces were featured in Kate Spade’s resort 2011 collection.
