L&T’S GIFT TO CITY: Lord & Taylor literally took to the streets Wednesday night when it unveiled its fanciful holiday windows. Before the windows were presented, screaming fans watched teen girl group Fifth Harmony perform several songs on stage in front of the Fifth Avenue flagship.
“The annual holiday windows are our gift to New York City,” said Liz Rodbell, incoming president of Hudson’s Bay Co. Department Store Group, parent company of Lord & Taylor. “Next year marks the 100th anniversary of our iconic Fifth Avenue building and as a New York City landmark, it’s fitting that this year’s holiday windows celebrate the city.”
This year’s windows were inspired by vintage Manhattan, reflecting its rich history of tradition. The windows follow Lord & Taylor shoppers from years gone by, including a day of shopping, tea and lunch, the opera and a gift exchange. Within the animated scene of the store, the holiday shopping experience is brought to life, with holiday gifts overflowing on the shelves, children shopping with their moms at the store juggling lots of gift boxes, and Santa Claus interacting with children and families. In one of the mechanical windows, a couple is shown celebrating the holiday evening together, exchanging gifts and sharing a good-night kiss before putting the kids to bed.
“In each scene, there’s a little bit of Lord & Taylor history,” said Roe Palermo, divisional vice president of visual merchandising at L&T. Some 55 people work on the windows for the course of nine months. The window sets, which are on hydraulics, weigh up to 2,000 pounds. L&T’s windows are created in a workshop underneath the Fifth Avenue sidewalk and then moved onto street level.
