IF THE SHOE FITS: Forget the glass slippers — if Cinderella were around today, she’d be sporting a pair of limited-edition, red-soled 120-mm. heels made by Christian Louboutin in Paris.
At least, that’s what the shoe designer imagined when he was asked to give his interpretation of a modern-day Cinderella slipper in honor of Walt Disney’s release of the “Cinderella” Diamond Edition on Blu-ray disc this fall. The fairy-tale-inspired shoe was on display for the first time on July 4 in Paris.
Opting out of using solid glass — they would never have survived Parisian cobblestones, not to mention the blister nightmare — he evoked lightness using white lace and sparkling crystals. Perched on a red cushion, and protected by a castlelike structure, the delicate, miniplatform lace heels adorned with Swarovski Elements were shown alongside stills and sketches from the making of the 1950 animated film.
“Cinderella is not only an iconic character when it comes to beauty, grace and fairy-tale love, but also shoes,” Louboutin said. “Her character and her story dictated the design to me, it was all there in the pages and the words of this tale.”
He plays a romantic, pensive cobbler in a short Disney clip about the making of the shoe, which was also shown as part of the exhibit. In the six-minute film, Louboutin is under a tight deadline to finish Cinderella’s shoe, and as the clock ticks, friendly animals come to help him find inspiration in the dead of night. He finds it when he observes a modern-day Cinderella hard at work, dreaming of a better life.
Speaking of Disney, Sephora has teamed up with the company for a comprehensive beauty collection that will hit counters in October. The first lineup will include color cosmetics, fragrances and nail products. The concept: sophisticated beauty collections for grown-up girls that will offer them a fresh perspective on Disney’s classic princess stories.
