CAFÉ CULTURE: Guests spilled into the arcaded surround of the Palais Royal Thursday evening as Maison Kitsuné fêted the opening of its Parisian café there, so tiny is the hip venue.
“It’s the most beautiful place in Paris, to my mind,” said Gildas Loaëc, one of the brand founders, of the Palais Royal setting. He hopes that people soaking up the sun in the gardens will pop in for coffee and cakes in the afternoons, he said.
“It’s romantic,” co-founder and designer Masaya Kuroki added.
The brand (with its music label) is going from strength to strength and hopes to open five new stores this year, Loaëc said. There should be two in Paris — in the Marais and Saint-Germain neighborhoods, one in New York and two in Japan.
“Last year, our turnover was around 10 million euros [or $13.3 million at average exchange]. We saw 40 percent growth in 2013. We’re doing good, and we’re reaching another scale,” said Kuroki. “This fall-winter is probably the biggest collection we’ve ever done before, and probably the best.”
Later in the evening, guests were treated to a live acoustic set by British indie band Citizens!, signed to Kitsuné, in its boutique just around the corner.
