HAIR RAISING: It’s been a busy week or so for Los Angeles hairdresser Mara Roszak who styled host Kat Denning’s tresses for the People’s Choice Awards, handled co-host Amy Poehler’s hair for the Golden Globes and was named the newest member of L’Oréal Paris’ celebrity beauty team that includes manicurist Tom Bachik and consulting makeup artist Billy B.
“I really wanted to partner with a brand that I actually loved. That was something that was really important to me. I’m a hairdresser. I’m not a salesperson,” said Roszak. “I used to smuggle Elnett in from Europe. I put 50 cans of it to put in my suitcase and would pray that nobody stopped me at customs, and my mom always dyed her hair with L’Oreal. Other things had come my way, and I was like, you know what, it doesn’t feel right because it wouldn’t be genuine and that’s not who I am.”
Roszak has quickly built an impressive red carpet portfolio working with actresses the likes of Emma Stone, Zoe Saldana, Lily Collins, Mila Kunis and Evan Rachel Wood. When she’s not on red carpet jobs, Roszak cuts hair at the Andy Lecompte Salon. With the advent of YouTube tutorials, she suggested that red carpet looks are having more influence than ever on consumers. “The average person is like a miniature hairdresser. It really is incredible. I see people walking down the street with these beautiful styles,” said Roszak. “Our hair is an extension of our personality, and it really can be playful and fun. I want to encourage women and girls to try new styles and not feel like they have to live inside a box.”
