MARC OF EXCELLENCE: Marc Jacobs is becoming a regular in Berlin, thanks to his participation in Peek & Cloppenburg’s Designer for Tomorrow program. On Wednesday, he took to the Mercedes-Benz Berlin Fashion Week runway in a kilt and red rubber-capped Prada brogues to present the latest installation of the talent contest for up-and-coming designers, judged by German fashion industry experts.
In the running were two London-based designers, Laura Williams, with knitwear, knit prints and parkas, and Ramil Makinano, who showed clever neon sci-fi graphics. Copenhagen’s Camilla Salgaard Nielsen delivered Wonderland-influenced all-black structured dresses and coats, while Berlin’s Siddhartha Anselm Meyer was the sole contestant to show men’s wear — reconstructed, sustainable and surprising.
The winner was Spain’s Leandro Cano, whose exquisitely crafted leather and wool pieces showed a folkloric influence and surrealist volumes.
Behind the scenes, sources report that local favorite Meyer was neck-in-neck for the win for his brilliant color pairings alone.
Cano’s prize is a show at next season’s MBFWB, where Peek & Cloppenburg will cover the collection and presentation costs. He will also receive coaching, industry advice, trade fair participation sponsorship and the chance to work alongside Jacobs himself.
