MARKING A MILESTONE: Forty years of Carolee jewelry design is being celebrated at Bloomingdale’s with a retrospective of iconic pieces and the winners of a design contest Carolee staged with the Fashion Institute of Technology. The student competition had four categories central to the brand: pearls, metals, fashion and social, and a fifth “people’s choice” category, where the winner was determined by voters viewing the items on Facebook. The winners were Palwasha Iqbal, Yoonji Choi, Prakshi Sharma, Christine Gonzalez and Elyse Spencer. “They each had a voice. These are creative young women,” said Joel Fivis, president of Carolee, which is owned by Brooks Brothers. Fivis said the finished products reflected the students’ creativity and guidance from FIT professors and Carolee. “This was an opportunity for these students to see how real life intrudes into the design process, when there is a commercial need to blend with the creative.” The winning items, about 20 in all, are being sold at Bloomingdale’s, and featured in the 59th Street windows for the next two weeks. Carolee is donating $5 to The Breast Cancer Research Foundation for each student item sold, and for each legacy product sold.
