MILLY X LAURIE SIMMONS T: Michelle Smith, cofounder and creative director of Milly and artist Laurie Simmons have teamed to collaborate on several projects, the first of which is an event tonight at Milly’s SoHo boutique where they will unveil a T-shirt they have designed together for Planned Parenthood’s 100th anniversary. One-hundred percent of the profits from the sale of the T-shirt, which retails for $75, benefit the organization.
“I’ve been a Planned Parenthood supporter for years, but wanted to come up with a way to support that was meaningful and close to my heart and the work I do as a designer. What better way than to partner with Laurie Simmons, who is not only an iconic American artist, but a leader in speaking out for female empowerment and women’s rights,” Smith said. She said that by leveraging their fashion and art platforms, they hope to raise awareness of the impactful work Planned Parenthood does for women, “especially in this crucial time.”
The limited-edition T-shirt, featuring Simmons’ artwork, is available for purchase today on milly.com and at Milly stores in SoHo, East Hampton and Madison Avenue in New York.
The T-shirt artwork image was part of a series of five images created by Simmons to commemorate Planned Parenthood’s 100th anniversary last May. Four images were produced for print editions, which sold out during the event, and the fifth image will be shown exclusively on the Milly T-shirt.
The series, called “Walking & Lying Objects,” includes dollhouses, cakes, guns and handbags with long, slender doll legs, intending to make a statement on traditional gender roles. This is the first time the artist has used the legs of female athletes to acknowledge the strengths of women’s achievements. The human legs in these photos are coupled with bouquets, which represent a gift to Planned Parenthood for the role they have played in female empowerment and gender equality.
